A self-portraiture coop of sorts
March 28, 2008
Okay, so I'm supposed to be promoting this little collection of Etsy-based self-portraitists that I've joined. Everyone take note that the link is now in the sidebar. Got it?
I have mixed feelings about my participation. On one hand, all exposure is good exposure for an emerging artist. On another hand, I can't say I am...er...terribly taken with any of the others' work.
Furthermore, while my thesis dealt with self-portraiture as a genre, as a convenient segue to other things, I don't really feel that any of the paintings that I produced really qualify as self-portraits of me, simply because they are all layered with meaning from other women's paintings. My recurring face was supposed to be the medium for this project, not the subject.
And my thesis was just that: a project. A long and involved project, and ultimately one that I was quite proud of, but nevertheless just a project. Self-portraiture isn't my subject of choice. It isn't something I plan to pursue in future.
On a more amusing note, the artist heading up this website, Jim Read, asked for "a few words" to accompany my page. I jam-crammed my thesis into three paragraphs and sent that to him. Looks like only the first three sentences were acceptable. Darn those long-winded Reedies. Mustn't overload potential buyers with information, or they'll kill yer just to simplify things.
